주요표현 정리

오늘은 지난 포스팅에 이어서 <프렌즈 시즌1>,
2화의 주요표현을 다뤄보겠습니다.

 

 

 

 

주요표현

 

Monica : kissing is as important as any part of it.

* A is as + 형용사 + as + B : A는 B만큼 형용사하다

 

Ross : Yeah, and it's not that we don't like the comedian,

* It's not that 주어+동사, it's just that 주어+동사 : 주어가 동사하는 것이 아니라 단지 주어가 동사한다는 거야.

   ex) It's not that I don't want to marry you, it's just that we are still too young. 

   내가 너랑 결혼 안하겠다는게 아니라 아직 우리가 너무 어리다는 얘기야. 

 

Chandler : after the concert's over, no matter how great the show was,

* no matter what / how / who / where + 주어 + 동사 : 주어가 무엇을 / 어떻게 / 누구와 / 어디서 동사를 하든 상관없이

   ex) No matter what you do, I don't care.

   니가 뭘 하든 난 상관안해.

 

Chandler : basically just trying to stay awake.

* stay awake : 잠이 깨어있다, 잠들지 않는

 

Rachel : Otherwise next time you're gonna find yourself sitting at home listening to that album alone.

* otherwise : 그렇지 않으면, 그게 아니면

* find oneself + v ing : v 하고 있는 자신을 보다, 깨닫다.

 

Marsha : While she sits at home trying to get the mastodon smell out of the carpet!

* 주어 + 동사A + 동사B-ing : 동사B 하면서 동사A 하다.

* get the smell out of 무엇 : 무엇에서 냄새를 빼다.

* while 주어 + 동사 : 주어가 동사하는 동안

 

Chandler : I think this is episode of Three's Company where there's some kind of misunderstanding.

* where : 장소뿐만 아니라 상황도 꾸며줄 수 있음.

   ex) She's past the age where she needs a babysitter.

   그녀는 보모가 필요한 나이가 지났다.

 

Monica : Are you through with that?

* be through with + 무엇 : 무엇을 끝내다. 완료하다.

 여기서는 '그거 다 마셨지?' 로 해석됨

 

Monica : That's because as far as my parents are concerned,

* as far as + 사람 / 무엇 + is concerned : 이 사람은 어떻게 생각하냐면 / 무엇에 관해서라면

 

Monica : Apparently they had some big ceremony before I was born.

* apparently : 상황을 보아하니, 보기에는, 듣자하니

 

Rachel : Has anybody seen my engagement ring?

* 현재완료 의문문 문법

*  have + 주어 + p.p. ? : 경험 또는 완료

*  have + 주어 + ever + p.p. ? : 경험만

 

Rachel : Oh, like I wasn't dreading tomorrow.

* dread + 무엇/동사 ing : 무엇을 매우 걱정하고 두려워하다.

 

Monica : Any diamond ring we find, we'll run it by you.

* run + 무엇 + by + 사람 : 사람의 의견을 듣기 위해 무엇을 설명하거나 정보를 주는 행위

 

Chandler : Kind of puts that whole pillow thing in perspective, huh, Mon?

* put + 무엇 + in perspective : 무엇을 객관적으로 / 넓은 시각으로 / 긍정적으로 보다.

 

Rachel : Well now, how do you fit into this whole thing?

* fit into ~ : ~에 섞이다, 맞춰 들어가다, 적응하다

   ex) She fitted into the team very well.

   그녀는 그 팀 사람들과 아주 잘 지냈다.

 

Ross : Carol says she and Susan want me to be involved,

* involve + 사람 : 사람을 끌어들이다.

* 주어 + involved : 사람이 관련되다, 휘말리다.

 

Ross : but if I'm not comfortable with it, I don't have to be involved.

* comfortable with ~ : ~에 대해 마음이 편한

   ex) I don't feel comfortable with the situation.

   난 그 상황이 편하지 않아.

 

Ross : Basically it's totally up to me.

* basically : 결국, 기본적으로, 원래

* be up to + 사람 : 누구에게 달렸다.

 

Chandler : I mean persumably, the biggest part of your job is done.

* persumably : 추측하건대, 내 생각으로는

* big = important

   ex) It's a big day today.

   오늘은 중요한 날이야.

 

Monica : Were you planning on bringing  up the whole baby thing?

* were you 동사 ing ? = were you going to 동사 ing? : 동사 하려고 그랬어?

* bring up + 무엇 : 어떤 이야기 / 화제를 꺼내다.

 

Monica : Because I thing it might take some of the heat off me.

* take the heat off + 사람 : 사람에게 가해지는 압력, 책임, 비판등을 지워주고 해소하다.

 

Mrs. Geller : We ran into her parents at the club.

* run into + 사람 : 사람을 우연히 마주치다.

 

Monica : What's that supposed to mean?

"그게 무슨 말이에요?" 로 해석 (관용적 표현)

* be supposed to + 동사 : 원래는 동사 하기로 되어있다.

 

Mr. Geller : And I read about these women trying to have it all,

* 사람 + 동사 ing : 동사하는 사람

 

Mrs. Geller : Oh, so this does work.

* 동사 앞에 do를 사용하는 경우 : 강조하거나 또는 상대방의 말에 동의하듯이 '정말로 그렇긴 하다'라는 말투를 넣을 때

 

Phoebe : She's like this high-powered, driven career type.

* driven : 어떤 목적을 가지고 끈기있게 전진하는 

* career driven : 일과 경력을 중요시하며 열정적인

 

Ross : Well, you may want to steer clear of the word "dumped".

* you may want to + 동사 :  충고, 조언하듯이 ~하는게 좋겠다.

 

 

 

재미있는 표현

• Hello, Mr. "I can do anything!"  평소에 "난 뭐든 할 수 있어!"라고 자주 말하는 사람을 놀리는 표현
• Q. Is this bad time? 안 좋은 때이거나 바쁜 시간에 찾아온 건 아닌지 배려하며 묻는 표현
• A. No, It's the stone age. 바쁘지 않다는 것을 재치있게 표현
• Doy! 뭐래, 당연한거 아냐?, 뭐 당연한걸 물어봐~ 

 

 

유용한 표현

• shoot for the stars 크고 높은 목표를 세우고 그 꿈을 이루기 위해 정진하다는 뜻
• here's the deal 설명하자면 이래, 이렇게 된거야, 결론은 이래, 이렇게 하자 등 다양한 상황에 쓰임
• take one's time 시간을 충분히 가지고 천천히 신중하게 하다
