오늘은 4화의 주요표현 및 단어를 정리해 보도록 하겠습니다.

주요표현 및 단어

 

Phoebe : Okay, okay. If I were omnipotent for a day, I would want, um, world peace, no more hunger, good things for the rain-forest. ... And bigger boobs!

* omnipotent : 전지전능한

* hunger : 기아, 굶주림

* boob : (여자의) 가슴

 

Ross : Well... see, you took mine. Chandler, what about you?

* take mine : 내 것을 가져가다, 내가 하고 싶은 걸 다하다.

   ex) I'll just take mine coffee black.

   저는 그냥 블랙으로 할게요.

 

Ross : It's okay, you know, you just nodded off again.

* nod off : 깜빡 졸다, 꾸벅꾸벅 졸다

   ex) Please don't nod off at the wheel.

   운전 중에 졸지 마세요.

 

Phoebe : My grandmother has this new boyfriend, and they're both kind of insecure in bed. Oh, and deaf. So they're constantly, like, having to reassure each other that they're having a good time. You have no idea how loud they are!

* insecure: 자신이 없는, 긴장을 많이 하는, 불안정한

* deaf: 귀가 먹은(= 귀가 잘 안 들리는)

* reassure: 안심시키다

 

Monica : Well, if you want you can stay with Rachel and me tonight.

* stay with : ~의 집에서 머물다

   ex) stay with me as you do now.

   옆에만 있어줘요.

 

Chandler : You got way too much free time.

너도 참 할일 되게 없다.

* way : 대단히, 매우

* way 1.방법, 방식  2.길, 도로  3. (부사)저쪽으로, 저 멀리

 

Chandler : Well, aren't we Mr. "The glass is half empty."

* the glass is half empty : 컵에 물이 반밖에 안남았네. (비관적, 부정적)

* the glass is half full : 컵에 물이 반이나 남았네. (긍정적)

 

Ross : Today's the day Carol and I first... consummated our... physical relationship.

* consummate : 극점에 달하게 하다

* physical: 육체적인

 

Ross : Alright, alright. Maybe it'll take my mind off it. Do you promise to buy me a big thumb finger?

* take one's mind off : ~를 잊다, ~에서 마음을 돌리다

 ex)Don't feel sad anymore and keep your minds off everything. 

 더 이상 슬퍼하지 말고 모든 것을 잊어라.

 

Ross : Hey, by the way, great service today.

* by the way : 그런데 (대화의 화제를 바꿀 때 사용)

 (= well, anyway, but, however)

 

Rachel's friend : And while we're on the subject of news ...

* be on the subject of : ~에 관하여 말하다

  ex) a magazine article on the subject of space travel

 우주여행이라는 주제에 대한 잡지 기사

 

Chandler : MC. Tavish crosses the blue line, passes up to Leetch!

* cross : 가로지르다

* up to : ~까지, ~에게

 

Chandler : We'll take a brief timeout while Messier stops to look at some women's shoes.

* brief : 잠시 동안의, 짧은

* stop to look at : 정신이 팔리다.

 

Ross : Actually, nectarines. But, basically...

* nectarine : 천도복숭아

 

Ross : Then we, uh... then we got dressed, and I... I walked her to the... the bus stop... I'm fine.

* get dressed : 옷을 입다

* walk to : ~까지 걷다, ~까지 데려다주다

 

Ross : You took mine.

내가 말하고 싶은걸 네가 다 말했네.

 

Rachel : So, come on, you guys, tell me all the dirt!

* dirt : 먼지, 사소한 것

   ex) tell me all the dirt : 시시콜콜한 얘기 좀 해 봐, 재밌는 얘기 좀 해 봐

 

Rachel's friend : Alright. Let's talk reality for a second.

* talk reality : 현실적인 얘기를 하다

* for a second : 잠시

 

Rachel : This is what I'm doing now.

난 지금이 좋아.

 

Monica : We thought since Phoebe was staying over tonight we'd have kinda like a slumber party thing. We got some trashy magazines, we got cookie dough, we got Twister..

* since : ~때문에

* stay over : 자다(= 자고 가다)

* a slumber party : 파자마 파티

* trashy : 쓰레기 같은, 저질의, 야한

 

Monica : Could you please tell me what this is in reference to? ...Yes, hold on. Um, they say there's been some unusual activity on your account.

* in reference to : ~에 관하여

* hold on : 기다려주세요

* unusual activity : 비정상적인 활동, 이상한 활동

* account : 신용 거래 

 

Ross : But now you mention it, there was ice there that night ... It was the first frost.

* but now you mention it : 말이 나왔으니 말인데

* frost : 서리

 

Monica : You should feel great about yourself!

* feel great about yourself : 자신감을 가지다

 

Phoebe : Oh, like that's a word.

* like that's a word : 그래, 말은 쉽지.

 

Chandler : Listen, it's kind of an emergency. Well, I guess you know that, or we'd be in the predicament room.

* emergency : 응급상황

* predicament room : 응접실

* predicament : 곤경, 궁지(emergency보다는 덜 심각한 상태를 뜻함)

 

Receptionist : Any minute now.

* any minute now : 조금만 기다려요
